External oak doors are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative option to red hardwood, the construction of these doors is usually what is called engineered. This term means that the internal of the door is made of smaller pieces of timber, the exterior face has then what is called a plank (thick veneer) applied to the surface. The advantages are that the door remains much more stable and is also less prone to warp and twisting, and is also significantly lighter. However great care must be taken to finish these doors to the manufacturer’s instructions. We would recommend a quality finish such as Sikkens or Sadolin exterior coating.
